The Benchmark, a Place to Call Home

After graduating from college, my employer offered me an incredible opportunity to travel all over the world for 9 months to learn my company’s products. What an incredible opportunity, right? RIGHT! In less than a year I visited 9 countries and 14 states (I’ll just go ahead and tell you that I grew up and went to college in Alabama, so this absolutely rocked my world)….But there was a catch; they told me that they would relocate me after my 9 months of training were up, and they weren’t able to tell me where I would end up having to move. I decided that despite the unknowns, the opportunity was too awesome to pass up.

In late February of 2013 I got a phone call from my manager telling me that I would be relocated to Ohio the first week of April and that I would be managing customers in OM, MI, IN, and KY and traveling about 70% of my time. I will not lie to you, I was wary of moving to Ohio. I mean, come on, it’s Ohio, right? Wrong! I was SO WRONG! I’ve fallen in love with Columbus. My love for Cap City truly began at The Benchmark. I was desperate to find an apartment, and find one fast. After living out of two suitcases and being in and out of dozens of hotels for 9 months, I truly needed somewhere that I felt welcome and comfortable. From the second that I walked into the Community Building I knew that The Benchmark would be somewhere that I would be able to feel at home. I like to think that it was fate.

In college it was so easy to make friends simply because everyone is out to make new friends. I’ve found that the real world is quite different. It’s tough moving to a new state where you know no one, you’re the one with a funny accent, and you’re only home once in a blue moon. The last factor is the kicker – how do you meet people when you’re NEVER home? Thank goodness for The Benchmark!

When I work from home, I work in the community building which has allowed me to meet and become friends with fellow Benchmarkers. The pool party over the summer was such a blast and I met neighbors that day that have become some of my best friends. Every event that The Benchmark has had has led to me making at least one new friend. I love it. Of the friends that I’ve made in Columbus, the majority of them are neighbors, which is SUPER convenient and a ton of fun.

If you had told me almost 10 months ago that I would love Columbus as much as I do, I wouldn’t have believed you. And if it weren’t for The Benchmark, I’m not sure that would be the case. So, there you have it – that’s why I love calling The Benchmark “home.”
